Tudor refurbishment and extension, Lismore.

Historical Context:
The Tudor architectural style, which originated in England during the late 15th and early 16th centuries, is renowned for its distinctive half-timbered appearance, steeply pitched roofs, and ornate detailing. The style was brought to Ireland in the 16th and 17th centuries, influencing Irish architecture with its robust structural forms and decorative elements. Tudor architecture in Ireland is marked by a blend of local materials and traditional English design, reflecting both the era’s craftsmanship and its adaptation to new contexts.
Extension Design:
In our design for the extension to the historic Tudor house, we aimed to respect and highlight the original structure while introducing a bold contemporary contrast. The Tudor house features a classic red corrugated metal roof, a material that echoes the era’s practicality and durability. Our extension builds on this tradition by incorporating a modern interpretation of the corrugated metal roof, using black corrugated material applied both vertically on the walls and on the roof.
The choice of black corrugated metal and its vertical orientation draw a direct reference to the vertical mullions of the Tudor windows. This subtle nod to Tudor detailing ensures a visual dialogue between the old and new, while the stark contrast in color and material highlights the distinction between the historical and the modern.
Contemporary Contrast:
The extension serves as a deliberate and contemporary intervention, purposefully designed to stand apart from the Tudor building. This contrast emphasizes the Tudor house’s historical significance, making it the focal point of the site. The modern materials and design approach of the extension do not mimic the Tudor style but rather offer a fresh perspective that enhances the heritage building’s presence and character.
Conclusion:
This design strategy ensures that the Tudor house remains a prominent historical landmark, while the contemporary extension introduces a dynamic and distinct contrast. The extension respects the architectural legacy of the Tudor building while celebrating modern design principles, creating a dialogue between past and present.

At JP Design Consultants, our mission is to craft spaces that not only enhance functionality but also celebrate and elevate the intrinsic beauty of existing structures. In our latest project, we are honored to undertake the refurbishment and extension of a distinguished Tudor-style building. Our approach blends a contemporary extension seamlessly with the historic charm of the original structure, elevating the property’s overall aesthetic appeal. By harmonizing modern design elements with the Tudor architecture, we strive to create a space that both respects the past and embraces the future, resulting in a refined and sophisticated enhancement of the property’s character.
The Tudor style house is listed on the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage, hence a certain level of sensitivity was needed within the design process.
